A charming bridge construction experience

Poly Bridge is part blueprint engineering and part bridge construction playable on Steam. The ultimate goal is to get vehicles from one side of the screen to the other, but as players progress, they will find that doing this is far more complex than it sounds on paper.

By constructing foundationally sound bridges, players can create routes for vehicles to pass through. Those familiar with games like Bridge Constructor or Bridge Constructor Portal will feel right at home with the design and mechanics Poly Bridge presents.

The perfect bridge... the 4th time round

Poly Bridge presents a simple goal but places various obstacles in the player's path. Through a clear and concise tutorial, players learn how to build basic bridges and how to leverage other mechanics such as hydraulic bridges. It quickly becomes apparent that experimentation is a core concept of play, with the blueprint mode providing opportunities to scrap your creations and try again.

The typical gameplay loop will feature creating what you think is a perfect bridge, only for one vehicle to overstay its welcome and bring it crashing down to the ground or ocean, in most cases. Then it's back to the drawing board to optimize your design until you create a stable structure for the vehicles to pass over.

While basic in design, Poly Bridge quickly ramps up the difficulty by introducing other vehicle types with varying sizes and weights and other obstacles like passing ships and ramps. These additional challenges help keep the game feeling fresh and challenging without overloading the player with a myriad of new mechanics. Altering the difficulty through extra challenges also helps avoid burnout while playing.

You are the protagonist

It's not surprising that the construction genre of the game lacks a fully fleshed-out campaign. Instead of following a protagonist, the game puts the control in the player's hands. There is no one solution to the problem in front of you; instead, you must use your imagination and problem-solving skills to create a solution.

Poly Bridge gives you multiple material types to use, which each has its strengths and weaknesses. Similarly, how many you use can impact your score upon completing the level - to which there are over a hundred.

Finding unique and exciting ways to use less of the provided budget to get a better score can be addicting, especially when those budget cuts mean the vehicles get across by the skin of their tires.

Becoming the best bridge engineer

Following the campaign mode, players can experiment in the game's sandbox mode, which removes any limitations to the player, and allows them to create solutions using whatever and however many materials they want. The drawback to the sandbox mode is that while it was a fun departure from the core game mode, it quickly becomes mundane when there is no fundamental objective behind what you're doing.

A sandbox mode like Minecraft can give you unlimited options to build and design, but due to the type of game Poly Bridge is, you cannot get the same grandiose feeling. If you enjoy sandbox modes, this will provide you with a few additional hours of fun if you try each level you can.

Gameplay on demand

Being level-based significantly benefits Poly Bridge, allowing it to become pick up and play. The short levels provide enough engagement that you can sit down and enjoy a quick 30-minute session as a break from work or flex your problem-solving muscles. Yet, the intricate problem-based level design creates a loop that you can enjoy for hours on end should you find yourself trying to optimize your bridge design for each level.

The bonus of the sandbox mode means players can enjoy a session without a looming objective over their heads, providing quick drop-in drop-out play sessions that players can put down with no repercussions.

Creating a bridge to your game list

Poly Bridge certainly brings a captivating experience with its poly-style design and relaxing music. Poly Bridge creates a balanced experience that tests your problem-solving skills in a fun and engaging manner through a careful difficult curve.

If you're looking to take a break from a bigger game but still want something engaging, Poly Bridge can be a peaceful getaway with more involved experiences. There's no harm in building a quick bridge for the game to go into your library. Don't skip out on a bit of guilt-free building with its sandbox mode, either.
